the Process
I am often asked two questions about my work.
The first is: How do you create these pieces?
My answer is simple: intuition.
Each piece begins with a previously used frame and matte. I remove the original artwork (most often a print) and intentionally create a new work designed specifically for the existing dimensions of that frame. This constraint becomes part of the creative dialogue.
Next, I select a used book, allowing intuition to guide the choice. Without pre-planning or reviewing the content, I randomly remove pages. These pages are then layered and adhered to watercolor paper, forming the foundation of the composition.
From there, I begin drawing in pencil and pen & ink. As the imagery develops, certain words or phrases naturally reveal themselves to me within the text. When something resonates, I intentionally highlight or incorporate it into the piece. The messaging emerges organically during the process rather than being predetermined.
The second question I am frequently asked is: What books do you use?
Every used book from which pages have been taken is documented and listed. However, I do not read the books or individual pages prior to using them. Reading the text would introduce conscious interpretation and potentially diminish the authenticity of the spontaneous connections that occur. By remaining unaware of the narrative context, the work preserves its intuitive and unfiltered nature.
